Q: Why can I not share Nikon JPG photos in my shared album?

I have loaded my Nikon DSLR memory card on my macbook pro and imported the photos in the main library. I now want to upload these photos to a shared album, I have tried this with every conceivable method (drag and drop, add to the shared album and share from the original photo) however I do not get an error but the photo does not show in the shared album.

When I try any of these methods with a photo made with my iphone everything works as it should.

The JPG file is about 9.4Mb large and 6016 x 4000 pixels.

What can I do to share these photos using my photo app?

Thanks

Ronald

    Hello rondamuk,

Thanks for your post. I’m seeing from your question that you’re not able to share any photos taken with your Nikon camera to a shared album but you can with photos taken with your iPhone.

Take a look at this page: iCloud Photo Sharing - Apple Support

File types that you can use in iCloud Photo Sharing

iCloud Photo Sharing supports JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and MP4, as well as special formats you capture with your iPhone, like slo-mo, time-lapse, 4K videos, and Live Photos. When shared, photos taken with standard point-and-shoot cameras, SLR cameras, or iOS devices have up to 2048 pixels on the long edge. Panoramic photos can be up to 5400 pixels wide.

iCloud Photo Sharing supports both MP4 and QuickTime video file types, and H.264 and MPEG-4 Video file formats. Videos can be up to five minutes in length and are delivered at up to 720p resolution.

It looks like your photos are 6016 x 4000 pixels and the article mentions that it can have up to 2048 pixels on the long edge of the photo.  So, I would suggest resizing one of your Nikon images ad save it as a jpeg.  Then try adding the revised image to your iCloud Shared Photo Album.

    Cheers!

    Hi Chris

    Thanks for your response

I tried that already, exported one of my photos, saved it with 640*400 pixels, but exactly the same problem, I spend an hour on the phone with Apple Support today, they could not resolve it either. When I have time tomorrow will speak with them further, will post the outcome on this forum.

    Cheers

    Ronald,

the size of the photos cannot be the problem.

I tested again in Photos for Mac, version 1.5 - when I share a JPEG of 20.7 MB and 6012x4509 pixels to a shared Photo Album, Photos will reduce the pixel size automatically.

To upload the photo to the shared album I selected it, then used the "Share" button in the toolbar, selected iCloud Photo Sharing,   and clicked the destination album in the drop down menu.

Have you checked, if the photos have an unusual color profile? You can check the color profile in Preview, in "Tools > Inspector". test, if you can share the photos if you modify the color profile.

Can you share any photos at all using your shared albums? Try a JPEG created with a different camera.
