iPhone 6s shuts down with over 40% battery power

Hi

My iPhone 6S continually shuts down with 40% or more battery power. If I plug it into my computer to charge it, it will come back on showing 40% power (or whatever it was on before it shut down).., Sometimes I am able to use it again if I unplug it but other times it will immediately shut down again. I have seen the DFU mode suggestion, but how do you do this with iCloud? I have no iTunes back up and when I plug my phone into my MacBook iTunes doesn't even come up...

I am so tired of this expensive device repeatedly failing me... I did an Apple diagnostics test over the phone and of course everything came up just fine!

My nearest Apple Service Centre is a way aways and I am pretty sure I will get the same thing, everything tests fine, and I cannot make the phone do this thing on demand.

Frustration!!!

Hi there,

I really dont think its a software error so restoring it probably wont fix it!

It seems to me like the inner resistance of your battery actually increased! That likely happens when the phone is stored pretty warm for a longer time! Thats just how lithium batterys acts to temperature. But what does "higher battery resistance" actually mean? Well it just means that your battery resists stronger to the current, so less current can flow which means that you cant discharge your battery as fast as you need it it some cases!

Lower Battery charge means lower battery voltage! To get the same power/wattage at this lower level you need more current and due to the higher resistance that much current isnt avaliable any longer!

So theres one thing you can try out to tell if its actually this problem.

Set the Auto-Lock to never, and turn the airplane mode on when youre almost at 40%.

Just set the screen to the darkest level and leave your phone on and keep watching it.

If it will die at 40% anyway its definetely not due to the resistance! If it will just drain to 1% or almost that it tends to be this problem!

when it finally died at 1% there is a chance that it will work fine again if you just charge it. But that isnt very likely.

However, if youre able to discharge it using my method but the problem is still there you definetely need a Battery replacement!

If my method doesnt work you should try to restore it!

Thanks so much for this, I would have respondedearlier butgot locked out of the communities due to an ID issue...

I followed your advice exactly and allowed the phone to drain which is seemedto do ok, then recharged it using the wall plug charger to full capacity plus a further hour. Once again the phone shutdown at around 40%. I plugged it back into the charger and it restarted within a minute and it showed up with 40% charge! So it seems I do need a new battery? I just need to convince my Apple service centre!!!

Allright, yes so you definetely need a new battery! Your phone has probably been at a hot place for a very long time, such things causes such batters resistance issues. So if you finally got your Battery replaced try to not leave your phone in the sun at the beach or things like that! I hope i could help you 🙂

Hi There

No, my phone has never been in a hot place... this seems to be a common issue with the later iPhones... the problem got worse and in the end my retailer sent the phone to Apple and it has been replaced. I was told by an Apple service rep that the issue here is that the battery they use for this phone was developed for the iPhone 5 and just isn't up to the demands of the new iPhones.... I wish Apple would concentrate on making things work before pushing new models, we do not need anew phone every year, just something that does the job it is sold to do!!

Call apple care and ask them to set up a repair. Then may be able to send you a phone first and you can send your iPhone back to them. https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair/service/express-replacement

It really depends where you are. Some countries dont have this option.

There is an iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown Issues.

The program covers iPhone 6s devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015.

Apple advises that, if you have experienced the issue, you should visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorised Service Provider to have your iPhone examined and the serial number checked to confirm your eligibility for a battery replacement, free of charge.
