Q: Not Receiving Notifications While Offline (Messages)

To start off, here is some information about my computer:

I have:

  • MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014)
  • 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
  • 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
  • Messages version 8.0

I also do not have any other apple product synced to this account.

The issue:

Typically Messages works completely fine and I have no issues. However, several times I have been offline while someone messages me. When I log back in, there is no notification (in the bottom menu bar) that someone has messaged me, however, the new messages still appear and are shown as unread in the application. This causes issues since I use this computer for work and I need to respond to people in a timely manner.

Is there a way to change this?

    Hi,

Can we expand and clarify this bit  a stage further please ?

When I log back in, there is no notification (in the bottom menu bar) that someone has messaged me, however, the new messages still appear and are shown as unread in the application.

Are you saying that when restarting the Computer the DOCK icon for Messages shows nothing for any iMessages sent during the time the computer was Shut down ?

And then in addition when the app is open but behind other apps the Unread Badge still shows on the DOCK icon but these are not the "missing" iMessages ?

What  do you have set in System Preferences > Notifications for the Messages App ?

In the Messages > Preferences > General Section is an option to "When I Quit, Set the Status to Off Line"

The iMessages account is not controlled by this (it does not display it's Status unlike Buddy Lists of all the other types of accounts).

This means that when the computer is On the DOCK icon should display the Unread Messages count for iMessages at least (if the above setting is Off).

Ergo you should see the count as soon as the Desktop has finished loading.

If the Notifications are set to Banners or Alerts then these appear top right of the Screen, not linked to the Dock icon.

    Hi Ralph,

Thank you for being willing to help me.

Yes, my issue is with the unread notifications on the DOCK icon (thanks for correcting my work usage!). I misspoke earlier, it works fine when I shut my computer off, but not when I put it to sleep (i.e. close the laptop). I want a way to be able to see if I have any unread messages without opening up the app when I awake my computer.

The app works perfectly fine when I get messages while using my computer.

As for my settings, here's a screen shot of my system preferences:

    Screen Shot - Messages Settings.png

And here's one of my preferences:

These are my setting while the problem has persisted.

    Thank you again.

    Hi,

    Ahh, the sleep issue.

In theory the computer is supposed to wake (and therefore re-establish Network connections) before the apps are started - or at least that is the way the info about the process implies things work.

Unfortunately the app,  or in the case of several internet capable apps, they can start up again before the Internet Connection is remade.

This means that the bit that tires to check on the iMessages server is not able to (AND does not report that it could not d it) leaving you in no-man's land.

As you discovered the only way to then see the iMessages that might have arrived during the Sleep is to start up the app.

In the past people have tried AppleScripts that are then listed in System Preferences > User and groups > Your account > Login Items to try and use the List as some sort of pause.

However modern Mac chips speeds make this unworkable.

I am not sure there is a way to make this work as it should or at least closer to the expectation of how it should work.

    Hi Ralph,

Thank you so much for your help. Sad that there isn't a way to fix the issue. Hopefully apple will fix the issue in a later model.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
