Q: Recurring Kernel Panic

Hi all,

In the last week, I've had 3 kernel panics on a Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011, 8GB RAM). No software has changed but after the first 2 kernel panics I updated the ATTO Thunderlink adapter to the latest version. After the first kernel panic an external USB HDD died and has been replaced with another. The Mac mini  has mirrored internal HDDs as startup, 2 external 2TB USB3 HDDs, Drobo S on Firewire 800 and a LaCie Big5 on Thunderbolt linked to the ATTO Thunderlink adapter. Network access is fibre channel through the ATTO Thunderlink.

Log files all show "Bogus bank type: " which I can't find any reference when I google it. Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing this?

thanks,

Chris

    Hello cm-nzl,

I see you're having issues with some reoccurring kernel panics on your Mac.

I would like to recommend you take a look at this article as it has good information on troubleshooting kernel panics: OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support

If you have trouble getting this isolated and resolved with this article, it does recommend bringing it into an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for further assistance.

    Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic

Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.  If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).

Tip: To help diagnose recurring kernel panics, record the date and time it occurs, and any information that appears with the kernel panic message.

    • Was the computer starting up, shutting down, or performing a particular task when the recurring kernel panic happened?
    • Is the kernel panic intermittent, or does it happen every time you do a certain thing? For example, were you playing a particular game, or printing at the time?
    • Does it occur only when a certain external device is connected, or a device is connected to a certain port?

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

    Cheers

Bogus bank type could be a RAM issue

disconnect all external devices (except Mouse and Keyboard, if possible use Apple devices) and reboot into safe mode

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    then check your RAM

on the 2011 mac you will need the disks that came with the computer to test the hardware

and Memtest is a Windows "standard" for many PC Techs, they also make a Mac version you can boot into and verify the RAM.

with any non Apple solution use with caution especially when you recommend them as an alternative or supplement.

    http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

if possible replace the RAM in their now with the RAM that shipped with the system and see if the behavior improves
