Q: OSX Server > Mail service > How to configure on a client machine

Hi,

Im using OSX Server > 5.1.5. I configured the settings for the mail service, and I want one of my client machines to use the email which was configured by my os x server. my host name ends with .private as I am only testing out the features before registering my FQDN.

 

2 questions.

 

1. Does the clint need to be OD bind and need to be logged in as network user?

 

2. I can't find the exact settings of

 

a. what password Im supposed to use (assuming the same login pw used when launching os x server?)

 

b. what to set on incoming and smtp server

 

Please help!!! thank you.

    OS X Server requires a working DNS. You should really set up the FQDN it will save you a lot of pain later.

     

    That said you dont need to use OD to use mail.

    The password is the email usernames login password.

    You could try IP addresses for incoming and SMTP server for testing assuming its all on your local network.

     

    But you should really set the FQDN and working DNS up now.

    thanks for your reply.

    when I created an email address in mail service, there is no place to set a password.

     

    that said,,, any other ideas of where Im supposed to get the pw..?

     

    When you say IP addresses for incoming and SMTP, thats the static IP set on the server you mean?

    Set up a User in Server.app - that user is a mail user and will have a password ( Server.app -> Accounts -> Users -> + to add a new user )

    Yes the static IP address for the server.
