Q: External Monitor works but inbuilt display doesn't

Hi,

 

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13 (Mid 2013) model.

Few months back the display stopped working but when I hooked it to an external monitor everything worked as expected except the display of course.

 

I took it to the service center and a descent computer repair shop and they both said that display connection with the logic board is fried and they would need to repair the logic board as the retina display is fine.

The price they are quoting is around 900$ which is just not fair.

 

Can't the logic board be repaired? 

anyone else in similar situation?


If all else failed I think I'll remove the whole display from the macbook. Anyone knows how to do that?

Due to the tiny parts and connections on a logic board, repair is usually not an option. I'm not saying it can't be done, but that it is hard to find someone who can/will work on resoldering (reflowing) delicate bits on an LB without making a right mess of the job.

 

Do you live in the US? If so, inquire about a "Depot Repair." Instead of working on the computer in the Apple Store, they send it to a central Apple refurbishment facility where they pretty much fix anything they find wrong inside (excluding the display unit itself) for a flat fee that is much less than the cost quoted you for an in-store repair. I believe that the current price for this service is around US$315.

 

The only downside I see is the depot repair takes about one working week, largely in shipping to and from the depot.

 

If you are not in the US, ask anyway. I don't know what Apple has set up for this kind of repair outside the US.

    I'll try and find somebody here who does this kind of stuff or else will send it to US with a friend or something.

    Spending 900$ to repair a 1400$ laptop is just not worth it.

    But luckily I would be travelling to the US this week so this might work.

     

    Can you also please guide me on how I can send my Laptop for the Depot Repair?

    Good to hear from you.

     

    You can't send a computer directly to the Apple refurb facility. Take the computer to an Apple Retail Store and they will take care of shipping it. You will need to pick up the computer from the same store that shipped it. I am fairly sure you cannot drop off the computer at a New York City store and expect to have it returned through a Chicago store.
