Q: MacBook Pro Battery Drains in sleep mode

Two days ago all of a sudden MacBook Pro lost all charge in sleep mode over night (from about 88-90% to 4-5%). The next night it happened again.

When laptop is in use battery consumption is within normal range more or less. Have checked that no apps are preventing from sleep, bluetooth is off, no wake up no wifi allowed. Have also done SMC reset. Situation remains the same - battery looses charge when in sleep mode (roughly 10-15% per hour).

Anyone has idea how to fix this?

Could you run that command again while running the MBP on battery?

A computer uses considerably less power when in sleep mode than when awake. The computer will continue to power RAM in sleep mode, so that whatever was in RAM when the computer went to sleep will still be there when the computer wakes. This also means that computers with more RAM use slightly more power in sleep mode.

Note: Portable computers have no network connectivity when in sleep mode, but can wake if the Energy Saver option "Wake for network access" is enabled , If you wish to use file sharing or don't want to interrupt your Internet connection, you should not manually put the computer to sleep, and you should drag the "Computer sleep" slider to Never.

Thank you for the answer, but it has nothing to do with my case.

As I've mentioned previously, the battery completely drains over night after laptop is put into sleep mode. According to logs, some process "EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)" (all logs are in the thread) is waking up laptop all the time till battery runs flat.

If you have any suggestions how to fix it, please, let me know.

    The battery status menu

Your primary resource for viewing battery status is the battery status menu. The battery status menu shows you how much charge your battery has and whether it's currently charging. This menu is at the right side of the menu bar:

    Battery Menu

The battery status menu updates frequently and changes depending on your screen brightness and system workload. You may see the time remaining drop significantly, for instance, if it updates while opening a very large file or starting up an application. It's important to remember it's an estimate based on what your computer is doing at the specific time it updates.

To see the health of your battery, hold the Option key and click the battery icon:

    Battery Menu with Condition

You'll see one of the following status indicators:

    • Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
    • Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new. You should monitor the health of the battery by checking the battery status menu periodically.
    • Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it did when it was new. You can safely continue using your computer, but if its lowered charging capacity is affecting your experience, you should take it to an Apple Store or Apple-authorized service provider.
    • Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally. You can safely use your Mac when it's connected to an appropriate power adapter  but you should take it to an Apple Store or Apple-authorized service provider as soon as possible.

Please, take a look at all the information that I've submitted previously to this thread.

The battery is in good shape (442 cycles, status is normal). There is no problem with battery when I use the laptop (I can work for about 7 hours without charging), but it drains battery when in sleep mode, when it's not supposed to use more than couple percent over night. What I witness is going all the way from 90-100% to 4-5% in sleep mode over night.

Can you tell me how to prevent laptop from waking due to EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)?

I have this question as well. In my case, EC.DarkPME wakes my laptop up every 14-18 secs.

I have exactly the same problem on 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 MacBook Air, El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1004)

I have 100% power at 9pm and 3% remaining on the next morning.  It is so bad that when I put the macbook into its cushion sleeve, it cooks itself and the fan runs the battery down even quicker.

Started a few weeks ago.  Been through all the threads, reset the pm settings to default, tried to set them on the terminal to put the thing into hibernation but to no avail.

No peripherals.  Happens with WiFi turned off also.

syslog | grep -i "Wake reason"

    Sep 23 11:46:17 Swidis-MacBook-Air kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)

    Sep 23 11:51:41 Swidis-MacBook-Air kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)

    Sep 23 11:52:17 Swidis-MacBook-Air kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)

There are no other wake events, this is what fills pages of syslog | grep -i "Wake reason" output

    Current settings are:

    Active Profiles:

    Battery Power -1*

    AC Power -1

    Currently in use:

    standbydelay         10

    standby              1

    halfdim              1

    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage

    powernap             0

    disksleep            10

    sleep                1

    autopoweroffdelay    14400

    hibernatemode        25

    autopoweroff         0

    ttyskeepawake        1

    displaysleep         2

    acwake               0

    lidwake              1

Anybody here who knows what can trigger Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance) every ~60 sec?

Just adding my pmset listing: powerNap off, WOMP off, netoversleep off, hibernatemode 3. After resetting my SMC, I'm still waking with EC.DarkPME every ~60 secs. It goes right back to sleep, wakes right back up.

The only other thing I noticed is that when I do wake up, parentalcontrolsd is running >100% CPU. But that's a whole, separate thread of trying to kill that thing as well
