spinning dial on iphone

I have just recently noticed something on my iphone that I havent noticed before. Right next to the wifi strength indicator there is a spinning dial that constantly spins even though I have updated all of my apps and have closed all open or running apps to the best of my knowledge. I have an ipad that doesnt have this problem, the spinning dial is not present on my ipad at all, just on my iphone. Does anyone have any idea what that spinning dial means or what it is indicating? I usually use my iphone inside my house and use wifi to make and receive calls through my wifi connection if that helps any. Im just wondering if there is something wrong with my phone since this particular problem doesnt happen with my ipad at all. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance for any help anyone could provide me.

Hey Tommy!

Knowing what the icons mean in the status bar, and exactly what's going on with your iPhone, is certainly a good thing.

Check out this iPhone User Guide to see what the Status icons represent.

For the one that you mentioned, the spinning dial, it's showing that there's some type of network activity happening on your iPhone. There are a couple of things that could be causing it from checking for emails to apps running/refreshing in the background.

To check to see what apps are set up to refresh in the background, check out the bottom of this article where it says Use Background App Refresh: About Multitasking on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This will allow you to manage which ones are able to refresh in the background.

To check the Mail settings go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data. If it's set to Push, then that means it is getting the new emails right when they're sent to you.

Have a great day!

Again, thanks for the reply, I did as you suggested and went into my settings and turned off the background app refresh and the spinning icon is still spinning at the top of my iPhone screen. I forgot to mention that I have an iPad as well but I dont have this problem with the spinning wheel on my iPad, just my iPhone. Is there anything else that anyone can suggest because I would imagine if that spinning icon is showing up it has to be using my battery power which would affect battery drain wouldnt it? Again, any and all help would be greatly appreciated with this problem.

Thanks again.
