Q: what is considered a valid author for a podcast?

I've successfully submitted my podcast to iTunes but the author is showing up as unknown. What is considered a valid author for a podcast?

The author's name is carried in the 'itunes:author' tag, and the labelling as 'unknown' usually means this tag is empty. You should always post the URL of your feed (and your iTunes Store page when applicable) when you ask a question - how else can we answer it?

I'm not tech savvy. I'm surprised i was even able to figure out how to post the question in the first place.

Well, you must know the URL (address) of your feed as you submitted it to Podcasts Connect, so all you have to do is paste it into a post here.

Depending where you host your show - you will have a place to enter in the Author info for the RSS Feed.

On Libsyn - go to - Destinations - then click "Edit" for the libsyn Classic feed - and fill in the Author info on that page.

DO NOT KEYWORD SPAM the author field.  One thing Apple is starting to do is remove shows from iTunes that abuse keywords in the author field.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I figured it out. I have another question. Regarding explicit language, some episodes might have explicit language and others won't? Is there a way to tag individual episodes and not the entire podcast? Or is it better to just tag the whole podcast to be safe?

You must tag any individual episodes where there is explicit language, and if any are so tagged you must also tag the entire podcast. The tag in question, in both the overall podcast and the episodes, is 'itunes:explicit'. The options are 'Yes', 'Explicit' or 'True' where there is such content, and 'No', 'Clean' or 'False' where there isn't. In the former case an 'Explicit' flag will be added, in the latter a 'Clean' flag. If there is no explicit content you can omit the tag and have no flag. Most podcast creation methods provide the facility to add the tag.
