Q: Why can't I connect an Amazon Fire Stick to my Thunderbolt Display with a HDMI adapter?

I have a HDMI > Thunderbolt adapter that works fine displaying my computer onto a tv. I was excited to connect my Amazon Fire Stick to my Thunderbolt display with the same adapter, but nothing happens when it's plugged in (fire stick power is plugged in too obviously). Is there something else I need to make this work? Has anyone been successful with this?

From looking at other posts from guys trying to connect their PS4 to thunderbolt display, it seems that a thunderbolt input requires a thunderbolt port on the other end an HDMI adapter won't work that direction. Anyone know any other cable / adapter configuration that would allow me to connect a fire stick to a thunderbolt display with audio and video?
