Canon Lide 220 buttons not working

I've bought a new Canon lide 220 scanner. When I press one of the buttons on the scanner, the Canon IJ Scan Utility 2 opens, but nothing happens. Everything is configured correctly in the application. When I press one of the 'Software buttons' in the Canon IJ Scan Utility 2, I get an error message: cannot communicate with the scanner. Code:15,156,0'.

If I use the scanner with Apples own 'Image capture' app everything works fine... but I want to be able to use the buttons ON the scanner.

I've de-installed and re-installed the Canon software several times, searched on the internet but haven't found any solution. I've removed the scanner through the 'Printers and Scanners' settings-app, didn't help either. I've tried several USB ports, now using one of the USB ports on the back of the MacMini.

Thinking of returning the scanner, as I've bought it because I wanted a scanner where I could scan with the buttons on the scanner.

Anyone have any other suggestions (except re-installing the software, as I've really done that several times now). A support call to Canon giving above information returned the suggestion to de-install and re-install the software & drivers. Not impressed as I stated clearly I've done this several times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I followed the recipe as you have laid out and find a divergence at step 6. "6. Check System Preferences/Printers-Scanners - Scan Button “Open Image Capture” NOT Canon IJ Scan Utility'.

After installing the drivers and utilities you must still add the scanner in the Preferences/Printers-Scanners for there to be anything related to scanners in Preferences. Once this is done, there is no "Scan Button "Open Image Capture" in preferences, rather with the CanoScan LiDE 220 selected in the left column there is the "Open Scanner" button on the right side which opens the Scanner window. When (and only when) this window is open the front panel buttons work, but in only the most rudimentary fashion - 1 scan for each button push with the document saved in the folder selected in the 'Scan To:' field.

In the old scan utility there were settings to select which actions were assigned to each button. Thus configuration and validation were done together. It appears that all of this code has been ripped out of the new utilities and they just assumed that the buttons would continue to work.

Still searching for a solution.

Hi,

Might be corrupted print preferences.

Open the Finder.

From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Then copy and paste the following:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.add.plist

Click Go then move the com.apple.print.add.plist file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac and the scanner.

Then reinstall the driver > http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/en/serviceDetail/method/load/id/4/sid/26/mid/2201139/ type/D/opt/1

I found the following limitation for the previous model, LiDE 210, on the Canon Australia web site. The page for the LiDE220 is not working, so at the moment I cannot check if the same limitation exists. But since the note is mentioned with the scanner driver, then I expect it will be.

2.[OS X v10.11]

(USB)Due to a change in the OS specifications, scanning from the product (by using the SCAN button) is not available. Perform scanning from a PC.

Hi Pahu,

Thank you for your response. I found the page on the Canon Australia website about the Lide 210 too, this doesn't seem very reassuring. Not very impressed with Canon's overall support / information: no support forum on their site, and the information on all the international sites seem to be different by country. Getting in touch with (Dutch) customer support later on. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

Some more info for you just to confuse the matter.

I located a LiDE220 and installed the ICA driver v4.1.3 and IJ Scan Utility v2.1.6 on an iMac running 10.11.5. After connecting the scanner I opened the IJ Scan Utility and selected the Settings page. I then selected the Buttons tab (the one in the middle with an image of the scanner and a down arrow as shown below) and configured the PDF settings.

I then OK'd the change and then pressed the PDF button on the scanner. A small window appeared explaining the function of each PDF button - to start and end a multipage PDF scan. I clicked OK and the scanner fired up. I presses the PDF finish button on the scanner when prompted and the Finder window containing my scan opened. So it seems that you can scan using the buttons on the scanner.

The next test was to see what happens when the IJ Scan Utility was closed and the button was pressed. This action made the IJ Scan Utility open however no scanning was performed, even if I pressed the PDF button again - or any other button for that matter. So this confirmed that the IJ Scan Utility needs to be opened on the Mac for the scanner buttons to work.

The last test was to change the action of what happened when a button was pressed. This is done via Printers & Scanners and selecting the LiDE220. Here you will see a Scan Button drop menu and the supported applications. I changed this setting to Preview and closed Printers & Scanners. Now when I pressed the PDF button on the scanner, Preview opened however no scan was performed.

So using the buttons on the scanner does have issues, however my testing has shown that it does work.

Hi Pahu,

thank you again for all your effort in helping me. I have configured everything as you said above, but I had the same problem: the IJScan 2 Utility opened, but the buttons didn't seem to trigger any action.

Spoke to customer support this morning on the phone. The funny thing was, the moment I had them on the phone and pressed one of the buttons on the scanner, the buttons suddenly worked. No idea why, but they did.

They're still 'buggy', sometimes they don't work, but if I make one scan through the 'software buttons' on the IJScan utility, the buttons seem to work afterwards. I also experienced an issue where the physical buttons on the scanner would only worked if the IJScan Utility on my Mac was the application currently on 'focus' on the Mac, not if some other program was on top.

I'm glad I've kind of got things working, but it doesn't seem 100% stable. I'll do some more tests the next couple of days and see how things work out.

cheers,

Remco

Canon Lide 220

MacMini late 2012

Mac OS X 10.11.5

1. Trash the Canon Utilities Folder;

2. Trash User/Library/Preferences/Canon;

3. Reboot your Mac;

4. Install the latest ICA Driver, then IJ Scan Utility 2 and IJ ScanGear (download them from Canon website);

5. Reboot;

6. Check System Preferences/Printers-Scanners - Scan Button “Open Image Capture” NOT Canon IJ Scan Utility

7. Press “PDF button” on your scanner - you’ll get an Image capture window opened with no scanner present;

8. Close the window;

9. Open manually “IJ Scan Utility” - you’ll get a window explaining how to use your scanner buttons.

It’s a little tricky, but worked for me. There’s still a bug in the driver: if you press “PDF button” on the scanner you can’t see any scanner in the Capture image window; on the contrary, if you manually open Image Capture, you get the scanner on the left, that's quite strange...

IJ ScanGear Starter GX still remains for me the best app for my Lide 220.
