Bug using a Wacom Intous Pen Tablet with iWork?

Hello,

I use a Wacom Intous Pro Small for a long time. But since ca 2 weeks in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote I can not keep text selected by sliding the cursor over text. In the moment I lift up the pen the text is unselected. Using the trackpad works fine. Or just the cursor keys + Shift.

I installed some weeks ago the newest versions of Numbers, Pages and Keynote. I think after this the bug occurred. But maybe also after installing a new Wacom driver.

MacBookPro late 2007, newest OS.

Greetings,

Claus

Some days ago I received this message from the WACOM support:

  • Yes, our driver team is working with Apple - at least we are trying to do this. This does not mean that we can promise any sucess here.
  • The issue is not within the Wacom driver. The Apple software is listening to and executing on different events that the driver sends to macOS - mostly these are typical "mouse" events. With the newer driver versions we cleaned our message handling and event sending to comply to Apple standards. This showed a bug in the software, the software listens and executes on 2 events where it should only use one - the software listens to a pen and a mouse event and executes both. This is why the selection disappears when you lift the pen. This should not happen, it is comparable to executing 2 mouse clicks when the button is only used once.
  • There are three possible workarounds for this situation: Either you keep using the older driver (which is as well no reason for a refund). Or you keep the pen on the tablet when using copy&paste. Third option would be to use the KC-100 Mouse for Intuos on your tablet.

After about ONE year of "back and forth" I get the message that it is a bug by Apple. Sounds for me too easy for WACOM. So, lets contact Apple and ask for a bug fix. Maybe with High Sierra?

I got this answer from a Michael (Higher Wacom Support), 18 Jan 2017: "Now that I have been back in the office, I have been able to test the Wacom driver using different tablets on the Mac OS and I have been able to reproduce the issue you are experiencing. The Driver team has been informed of the issue and it is on their schedule of bugs to fix. Right now, I do not have an ETA for the fix."

Hi everyone,

I just came to the forums to report this issue so I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one having it!

Sounds like it is finally on Wacom's radar, which is good. In the meantime, what are you all doing to make it work? Have you reverted to the earlier driver? If so, where can I download that? The version that was mentioned earlier in the thread doesn't seem to be available for download on Wacom's website any longer?

I have a further complication. I use software called SmartScroll to allow my Wacom pen to have "grab scroll" and inertia-scrolling capability. SmartScroll is unfortunately not compatible with the newest versions of the Wacom driver. The SmartScroll developer said it's an issue with Wacom (which I believe, given their handling of this bug), and there's nothing he can do until he addresses it.

So when I upgrade to the newest version of Wacom driver that fixes the selecting text issue, I'll lose the use of SmartScroll.

On the other hand, if the previous version of the Wacom driver fixes the selecting text issue, and also works with SmartScroll, that would be good enough for me. No need to upgrade to the latest version if the older ones do what I need.

Download it here:

http://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/WacomTablet_6.3.1 5-3.dmg

This version was ok to use with Apples applications. But I don't know if it works with SmartScroll.

Check also here:

Then -> "Drivers for Previous Generation Products" and find your tablet

Then -> "Show older versions"

I've noticed that with the new driver I even have issues selecting text in the presenter notes section and on the slides of MS Powerpoint. I have no trouble selecting text in MS Word or Excel with the Wacom pen; the problem is limited to Powerpoint.

Anyone else noticing this? For me, when I select the text, it highlights immediately as if it is selected, but then unselects.

Thanks. This appears to be a conflict between SmartScroll and Wacom, because when I turned SmartScroll off I had no issue.

Question: when you all scroll with web pages or documents, are you using your fingers on the Wacom tablet? I really love SmartScroll because it allows you to scroll with the pen (you hold one of the buttons on the pen, and drag down/up). This is faster than switching back and forth between using the pen and finger gestures.
