Q: which computer to buy
I am trying to decide between the macbook and the macbook pro. How does he single jack work with a hub? I keep my computers for a long time.

Hi,
I'll offer this with the little MacBook, an Air, and Retina 15 between work and family.
The single USB-C port is working fine for me. It was bought with the understanding that my MacBook is an ultra light portable computing machine and not the big full-featured system the 15" Retina is. The one port is not stopping me from any generally needed functionality that includes being a network engineer who uses the port for Ethernet and 9600 baud serial console connections.
The big MacBook 15 is not unlike several 13s I've bought for my users. The two USB and Thunderbolt ports will let you do more with peripherals.
Go to a store to compare all of them and handle them. Look at screen resolution, compare them physically. There's no right or wrong. My two are ultimate laptop choices. One is beautiful for being light and a long lasting battery charge. The other is beautiful for being incredibly powerful, more versatile, and more pleasant for a very long session with the keyboard and screen. The several 13" Retina and Air models I've bought for my users fit between the two I use including available at a best price.
I don't know what hub you will use but so far USB-C has worked fine for me. I use it with a serial adapter and Ethernet adapter if not a VGA display.
