I can't use by bluetooth headset when I have HDMI connection in

So I've recently got a monitor at my desk at University so I can now connect my macbook pro up.

As it has a HDMI option I went for that as purchasing a HDMI adapter is more relevant as I can use it for my tv etc.

Anyway; prior to this I used my bluetooth headset to listen to music while at work. Now with the HDMI cable in I cannot select my bluetooth headphones as a sound output option; although they are connected to the mac (via bluetooth).

Does anyone have any suggestions? or is this just something you can't do.

I have the apple mini display port to HDMI adaptor, and the HDMI cable is a mid-priced one can't remember which brand.

I have gone into Sound options in system preferences. For output options I only have the monitor (HDMI), or internal speakers (built-in), there is no option for my bluetooth headphones. When I check my bluetooth connected devices with my mouse and headphones appear connected. Next to the headphones I can open sound preferences but they are not in that window?

The only way I can listen through headphones is when I connect my cabled ones through the headphone set.
