I purchased a whole album but found some songs encoded as m4a and some m4p (protected). If I recall correctly, the individual songs were all priced the same at $1.29 so I assumed they were all unprotected. All the songs are shown as "Purchased ACC" in my library, but the m4p files won't play on some devices. Why aren't all files from the same album encoded the same?

The .m4p will only play if logged into the Apple ID that purchased the content.
Originally all tunes had DRM - when iTunes Match came out I signed up and most but not all of my tunes were available as .m4a so I am left with some .m4p files.

There was probably an error when you downloaded the album. Delete protected tracks and redownload Download your past purchases - Apple Support

If these are newly purchased files (within the last 6-7 years) try changing the file extension to .m4a and see if they play.
