The application "" can't be opened

I've recently been getting these 'The application XXX can't be opened' error messages when double clicking on files. It seems to happen randomly but the application always opens anyway. It started with Adobe InDesign but has also happened on Adobe Illustrator and Preview (so doesn't seem to be tied to Adobe software). I just click on OK and the error message goes away. This doesn't impact on workflow or anything but I'd like to get rid of it if possible. New 27inch iMac running El Capitan, fully up to date wth software.

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

It looks like executing the application is a fail. I think that you just need to chmod it to make it executable.

STEPS:

1. Open a terminal

2. Here are the commands:

cd

cd Applications

cd APPLICATION_NAME.app (where APPLICATION_NAME is your app)

cd Contents/MacOS

First Option (if you know which is the executable): chmod +x FILENAME (where FILENAME is the name of the executable)

Second Option (if you don't know which is the executable): chmod +x *

If it tells you operation not permitted, then add sudo in front of chmod

Hope it helps

I get this "the application xxx can't be opened" message regularly but in my case the application doesn't open. And it's not just one application it's any application that isn't already open. If I restart the iMac it goes away but it's not convenient to restart every time this error happens. After some time the error goes away and applications will open but it just ends up happening again at different times on different days

Any ideas?

For me, the solution (on High Sierra Public Beta) was to create a DMG in Disk Utility with the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" (note: NOT Case Sensitive), and then copying the application into the image.

Mind you, after running the application once from inside the image, the one I have in my /Applications/ folder works fine âš .

Hope that helps!

Hello !

To open an unidentified app , firstly download it , then drag and drop in application folder .

Go to application folder , select the application and right click on it , once it is identified you can double click it from application folder .

Lastly if you want to use it permanently , empty .dmg file from download folder as it occupy space .

Restart the machine and empty the trash .

Thanks !

Hi,

Are they apps like Adobe that need Java ?

Do you have the required Java Legacy parts for the OS level you are using ?
