My Drummer don't follow the arrangement section....

Hi,

I'm using Drummer for a song, but the thing is that in some parts of the song (Chorus, Bridge, etc.) the Drummer doesn't follow the arrengement bars on top, but follows the bars on the project, and that's a problem because some parts don't start exactly on the bars, maybe they start right in the middle. Everything is on time.

For example: the chorus starts right in between two bars of the project, so intead of starting the Drummer region with a cymbal, it plays arround with toms until it reaches the bar and then hits the cymbal. I've tried to modify the fills, the complexity of the playing, I've tried to move the arrange section, with and without it, but nothing happens. Instead of hitting the cymbal when the chorus starts, it does some fills and when it reaches the bar of the project hits the cymbal.

Any help??

Thanks

You can use the Drummer Editor to Control the drummer pattern to some extend:

  • Dial the Fill Knob all the way down to remove any fills that would appear at the end of a Drummer Region
  • Click on the Cymbals in the Drummer Editor so they turn from yellow (play) to gray (don't play)

As Ben suggested, you can drag a Drummer Region to a MIDI Track. This way you can use the Drummer Region as a "start" and edit ti after that. Or you can create anther MIDI Track with the same Drum Kit Designer plugin and add stuff to it, i.e. fills, crash symbols, etc.

Hope that helps

You have two option:

Option 1

  • Create the Arrangement Regions first and us the naming for the song sections from the popup menu when you click on the Region Name
  • Now when you create a new Drummer Track it populates the Track Lane with Region following the song structure from your Arrangement Track

Option 2

  • Create the Arrangement Region first and use the naming for the song sections from the popup menu when you click on the Region Name
  • If you have an existing Drummer Region, right-click on its Track Lane and choose from the Shortcut Menu "Populate with Drummer Regions"
  • Logic puts the corresponding Drummer Regions on the Track Lane following the exact song structure.

Please note:

  • The Drummer has Drummer Preset files stored on your drive and when you populate a Drummer Track that has an Arrangement Region with one of those names (Intro, Verse, Choris, etc) it just loads the corresponding Preset into that place
  • You can populate a Drummer Track even if you have Drummer Regions already on that Track. Logic will just "fill" the gaps with the corresponding Drummer Regions
  • If you renamed an Arrangement Region (from "Intro" to "Beginning Section"), then the Drummer will remember its original name and load that Preset ("Intro")
  • The other command from the Shortcut Menu "Create Drummer Region" creates a default 8-bar Region if there is no Arrangement Marker. If there is one, then Logic creates a Drummer Region starting at the click position to the start of the next Arrangement Region using the corresponding Drummer Preset based on the Arrangement Marker Name

If you look at the following system directory /Library/APplication Support/Logic/Drummer/Presets/ you will see in each subfolder (representing a Drummer) the Presets (extension .pdst) named after the song sections (Intro, Verse, etc). These are the files that are loaded onto the Track Lane Lane of a Drummer Track.

There are a lot of little details about the mechanics and the procedure around the Drummer. I explain them all in my book "Logic Pro X - How it Works" with unique graphics and diagrams, lots of information you won't find in any other book and especially not in YouTube video. It's not complicated, you just have to know about it and then you can really master those amazing features. "Understand, not just Learn"

Hope that helps

You need to cut Drummer into independent regions. Each region being the duration of a section of music. It will do what you're looking for at the start and end of those regions. Sometimes at the beginning of bars, depending on how complex you set the Fills knob. Smart Drummer regions can be set to follow other tracks, such as rhythm guitar or bass. But not the Arrangment Markers.

Thanks BenB,

I've already done that. And when I move the region to the position where the chorus starts, it transforms the interpretation to hit the cymbal when it reaches the next project bar.

I've also tried to add there another drummer region, but it's playing fills until the next region. There must be something "conditioning" my Drummer.

It's helpful but if you know something else I can do, I will really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot.

Best regards,

Smart Drummer works on an algorithm, it's not telepathic. If playing with various different drummers, genres, and settings doesn't give you exactly what you need, right-click the region, from the pop-up menu convert it to a MIDI Region, and then in the Piano Roll editor (double-click the region) manually add or subtract notes to specify what you want.
