Q: Stolen iPhone- do I need a new Apple ID?

Phone was stolen today. It still says "offline" and I've set up an erase request but its still pending. pretty sure ill never see the phone again but my bigger concern is the following:

if when i buy a new iPhone and set it up on my icloud- will that automatically cancel my "erase" request with the stolen phone? therefore allowing the thieves to enter the phone and retrieve any and all info they want (bank info, ect...). apple told me to NOT erase that device from my apple ID, and the make a new apple ID with my new phone, and that i can erase that apple id once i see that the phone was activated and erased.

confused. help!

You will not need a new Apple ID. Adding your Apple ID to a new iPhone will not cancel any commands made for your other iPhone.  The single representative that gave you the advice of creating a new Apple ID was wrong to encourage you to do so. https://appleid.apple.com/faq

How many Apple IDs do I need?

Just one. Use the same Apple ID everywhere you sign in to ensure that all your Apple services and devices work together seamlessly and you can access your personal content from all your devices.

If you still have access to your present account, and you have prompted an erase on the other iPhone there is no means for someone in possession of it to gain access to your email account. For extra precaution, it wouldn't be a bad idea to update the security on your account though, if you have not already done so.

Continue using your current Apple ID.

I am confused also. This is what Apple recommends when a phone is stolen:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support

It is recommended to change the PW of the Apple ID if it has been compromised but I have not heard of having to make another ID. If I were you I would call Apple ID Security.

    Hi there,

You don't need to create a new apple ID, you can use the old one.

When you select 'erase' in Find My iPhone it is only for THAT iPhone only, when the iPhone is turned and has either a active sim or connects to nearby wifi, it will then erase the device. It won't cancel your erase.

Im not sure who told you to create a new Apple ID, but that isn't correct.

I have multiple devices under my Find My iPhone, some are old and some are new. It only effects/erases the one you chose it too.

    Hope I helped

You do NOT need to create an AppleID. Just use the AppleID you have now with any new device. The new device will simply be added to your tracked and activation locked devices in your iCloud account. The stolen iPhone will still be there, and will remain forever unless you yourself chose to remove it from your list of tracked devices. I have five devices listed under my find my device tracking in iCLoud - adding a new device does nothing at all to the status of existing devices linked to your AppleID and iCloud account.

You should change your password if you have not, but as long as your AppleID itself has not been compromised, just keep on using it. And leave the stolen device in your list of tracked devices so it retains activation lock and thus cannot be used by anyone else.
