Q: 2012 macbook air 13-inch lcd screen has white square

All of the sudden on my daughter's computer there is a square let's say 2"x2" that is white and may have a couple of vertical lines running from the top of the screen to the bottom. What is this referred to? and is there a fix for it?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
