I have a macbook pro and 2nd generation apple tv. The apple tv icon pops up on the macbook but when i try to connect the two a pop up comes up saying "could not connect "Apple TV"'. What can I do?

Restart your Mac and restart your Apple TV.
Then click the AirPlay icon in your Mac's status menu bar then from the drop down menu click: Apple TV from AirPlay To:
