I've noticed another usability nuisance. The search used to be automatically restricted to the community you were in. Now it seems to search the entire database. Now you can go to the full search window and, very carefully, limit the "place" to a specific community. But that's counter-intuitive, and not much help to the novice. For example, I was in Using Apple TV and searched for "sleep wifi", but the top results were for Macs losing their connections, not Apple TVs.

I gave up on "in house" search long ago - I know that the following method does not help the newcomer, but I use Google Site Search exclusively

An example restricting to AppleTV forum where BOLD is the restriction to the forum:

    sleep wifi site:discussions.apple.com/community/appletv

you can see by removing BOLD would WIDEN the search to all ASC discussions AND User Tips

sleep wifi site:support.apple.com >> will search Apple technical articles in the support subdomain

sometimes it is handy to search ALL of Apple at once >> sleep wifi site:apple.com << to get BOTH ASC and Support at once

All mail apps interface with a server with either pop, imap, or Microsoft exchange protocol.  At least, pop & imap follow Internet standards that define the format of the data exchange.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Message_Access_Protocol

    proprietary https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Exchange_Server

In this way, all email clients are basically the same.

google search,  in google you can use the site: keyword to limit your search.  To search in the iphone forum:

    site:discussions.apple.com/community/iphone/using_iphone frozen

ccc didn't you write some post explaining all this?

Well, the question had to do with how Mail displays Conversations which - in my humble opinion - has to do with the settings and preferences in the app rather than with a server, POP, IMAP, or an exchange protocol. I can change preferences, write emails, and work within Mail without being online which also has nothing to do with internet standards or the format of a data exchange since there isn't one at that point. And, some mail apps have options or features others do not.

I really would rather no longer be contributing to this thread.

yes... a little while ago (?) = AppleTV "community" (are you experiencing "Phantom Posts" too?)

at bottom, the keyword(s) can be at the front or the end = anywhere "outside" the "site" string (has no spaces, only " : " and " / "s)

Thanks for the advice, CCC. I actually posted this because bobseufert has said the developers may be monitoring this thread. My concern is for the noobs, who might attempt a search before posting (not likely, I know). The current solution makes search less than useless. Seems like the new implementors just threw it in without attempting to reverse engineer the old design. "Specs, we don't need no stinkin' specs."

    Gotcha.

I am not sure that Apple ever does "target audience" focus group due diligence on anything. It is Apple's nature to decide "what is best" for us and let us "get used to it"
