Q: iPhone 6S Plus lost 53 gigas of Audiobooks

Hello,

I was selecting a page in Safari viewing the "open page list" in Safari in my iPhone 6S Plus (iOS 9.3.2) 128 giga. I was listening an audiobook via BlueTooth at the same time.

Suddenly the audiobook stopped playing and my phone screen went back to the home screen.

I opened the iBooks - application to restart the audiobook. I did not find the audiobook from the list. It only showed the about 10 PDF-files there I have loaded to the phone.

I opened the Music application, and only thing I see there is the "Sleep like a baby tonight" "purchase" I have not made.

Next I went to the settings and saw, that it reports about 54 gigas of free space which I "do not have".

The phone has lost all of the music and audiobooks I have put there. Total of about 54 gigas of files.

I seem to have all the photos remaining. I have no easy way of verifying if any of them are missing.

Please help me and tell me should I now just connect my phone to iTunes and do a Sync? How do I prevent it from deleting all the 54 gigas from my HD? I remember this happening sometime in the past when I deleted a playlist from my iPhone and synced and the result was, that iTunes had deleted the physical files from my computer too!!!

Help?

    Hi Kerappo,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities and for the details about what happened with your audiobooks. I understand that you have some Audiobooks and other content that are now missing from your iPhone and want to get those synced back.

In order to get your content synced back to your iPhone, you'll want to follow the article below. It has all the steps that you need to sync your content back.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB - Apple Support

If you were using Wi-Fi to sync your content instead of syncing via USB, that could cause the content to disappear. A great place to start double checking the settings for Wi-Fi sync and to see if that is set up is with this article:

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes using Wi-Fi - Apple Support

    I hope these help.

    Cheers!

I was able to sync my phone via iTunes and USB as before.

Took "a while" to get back the 54 gigas of data... Actually my music and audiobooks are on separate HDs and I did not yet sync the music (the music HD was "somewhere else").

My phone is under warranty. Should I take it to service due to the sudden loss of data?

    Hey Kerappo,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to start to restore your music and audiobooks. It's normal for it to take a bit of time depending on how much data you have to transfer.

I can understand your concern for the sudden loss of data. Something like this normally wouldn't have anything to do with a hardware issue. Issues with data loss are almost always related to software and are not common, but there are a few things that you can do to make sure your data remains safe.

The first thing that you can do on a regular basis is back up your device to either iTunes or iCloud. This will allow you to restore from a backup in the event of data loss. While backing up does not back up any synced content like music, audiobooks or movies, you can always re-sync them using iTunes on your computer. Check out this article for info on backing up:

One other thing to keep in mind with your content is that you'll always have access to your purchased content through your Apple ID. You can always re-download any past purchases you've made if something gets deleted using the steps listed here:

Download your past purchases - Apple Support

Another step that you can take to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again is to make sure that your iPhone is up to date. I see from your original post that your iPhone is on iOS 9.3.2, which is great! Just be sure to do updates as they are available. Feel free to check out this article if you have any questions about updating your iPhone:

    Cheers!
