Q: ipod touch 5th Gen completely dead

Basically, my ipod touch just turned itself off while it was in my bag this morning. It was fully charged and I had just been using to listen to music. I can't force a restart and iTunes doesn't even recognise it with a newly bought USB cable and the other is only a few weeks old. There's no significant outside damage, just a scratch on the screen protector and two of the corners.

the last time I had this problem it was due to a long due update and after connecting to my laptop, it was soon fixed and fully functional. I dont recall there being any reminders for a software update recently. However I don't remember the last update's number. However it is a second hand ipod touch and the home button stopped working a while ago and the battery no longer lasts very long.

Is it safe to assume that it's no longer usable? Can anyone suggest any other possible solutions?

Thank you.
