Q: MacBook Air battery won't charge after resetting SMC

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.20.33 PM.png

Hi all, hope you can help me with this. My Macbook Air Early 2014 model seems to have some problem with its battery. The battery status says "not charging" and it's stuck at 74%. The light on my charger is still red, and I have tried checking the battery condition, it says normal; also I have reset the SMC and all that stuff that is suggested on the discussion board, but still it's of no avail. Has anyone had a similar problem before?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Try resetting SMC couple of times more.

What did you figure out with your Mac?  Mine is doing the same thing.  Took it into the Apple Store today and they don't seem to know how to resolve this.

    Hi,

I've run into this problem with a friend who has a MacBook Air. SMC Reset does work, however, the last step - Press power to turn on computer can be left out. So here is the simple version.

    1. Shutdown your Mac.

    2. Connect your charger to your Mac. Make sure your charger is plugged into outlet.

    3. On the left side of keyboard press and hold [shift] [control] [option] and Power button-keep holding (LED on charger may change state) Then release power button after about 2-3 secs.

    4. Release the other keys. If your Mac powers up, shutdown. Do not disconnect anything! If it did not power up close the lid and leave it unattended for some time and do not use. Give it some time. Charging cycle count may take time to recalculate.

My friend's MacBook Air started it's charging cycle a couple of hours after performing this procedure. His LED went from Red to Amber and Green when charge was complete.

NOTE: If this or a NVRAM Reset does not resolve the problem then you should make an appointment with the Genius Bar. Make sure you have all of the symptoms you are experiencing and what you have tried so they can be well informed.

    Hope this helps you.

    Cheers!!

Thank you for your reply. I will certainly give this a shot and let you know what happens. Just a quick question - so if I go through and try this and nothing happens, then I should do the NVRAM reset? Or should I do both? Again, I appreciate the advice.

    Hi,

Please try the SMC Reset procedure above first when you have time to be away from your Mac. If it works, than that would be good to know. Doing both won't tell you or me which worked.

I know the steps above sound close to the actual procedure but I think you see the modification.

You are welcome. Please do let me know.

Let's save the NVRAM Reset after verification that this SMC Reset did not, in fact, work. Thanks much.

    Cheers!!

I just tried all the steps you listed. My mac didn't power up right away so I'm just letting it sit for now.
