iMac running slow in all apps, frequently with spinning beachball

It doesn't seem to matter what app I am in (even the Finder), it can take up to a minute to do simple tasks. I frequently will get the beachball and have to force quit a lot (usually after waiting several minutes). Getting a simple Google window open in different browsers (websites freeze, don't come up or just get the spinning beachball), doing most things in PowerPoint (especially going to Master Slides), opening pretty much any app (I mainly just use the core Adobe and Microsoft Office apps), etc. I am hard connected to an office ethernet connection. I keep a pretty clean Mac, not a lot of extras. Disk Utility doesn't find anything wrong. I have copied and pasted an Etre report below. Any suggestions short of getting a new iMac?

Your problem is likely due to installing the Sophos antivirus app on your computer. Antivirus, cleaning and any other third party maintenance utilities installed on a Mac are at best useless however, they can potentially damage OS X and MUST be avoided. Please carefully read Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security for more tips.f

To uninstall Sophos locate the developers instructions and uninstall it immediately.

Jun 9, 2016 2:44 PM in response to Baby-Boomer-USofA

This happens on or near startup before I am even coming close to pushing the RAM. I looked today after an entire morning of work and Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor is the lowest rung of green. Of course I understand that in an ideal world you max the RAM out but just throwing RAM at it will probably not help in my case especially considering it is a problem from startup.

Jun 9, 2016 3:13 PM in response to rkaufmann87

Uninstalled Sophos but not sure how much it has helped. From Restart to "Bong" 0.51. Restart to Sign in screen 1.59. Open Outlook 1.33. Open Illustrator 2.34 (note: opened separately for timing). Those are just two examples. It does this extra long start with all apps. And once in an app, clicking on just about anything will elicit a beachball and 10-20 second delay before the action executes.

Jun 9, 2016 6:34 PM in response to CharlesAnnexus

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

I logged some instances below when I got a delay/beachball as well as one unusual situation (second one down). I grabbed the times just before and just after the time I noticed the delay/beachball as well as what I was doing at the time. Hope this helps and is what you were looking for.

I have 21.5 iMac, 4 GB ram, mid 2010, and recently struggled with similar symptoms. I did install Avira anti virus, worried if that might be a concern. Took it to Genius Bar, they quickly determined that my hard drive was in the process of failing.. took it to a nearby Apple authorized vendor who installed a new drive. I restored the data from a TimeMachine backup. But it was an issue for me for several weeks before the Apple tech led me in the right direction.

Immediately uninstall the AV app you installed by following the developers instructions.. AV, cleaning, and ALL third party maintenance utilities are at best 100% unnecessary and at worst can be destructive to OS X. Please carefully read Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security. You can also find Linc Davis's advice in these forums on AV and you will see a more detailed explanation than mine.
