FaceTime is a great way to stay in touch, and I'm understanding you're having trouble actually answering incoming calls. There could be a few things happening to cause this, and I've got some troubleshooting you can try that should help!
- Make sure your iPad's iOS software is up to date. You can check for updates directly on the iPad under Settings > General > Software Update, or by connecting your iPad to iTunes on a computer. The following article gives more details and instructions on both update options.

- Verify that your iPad has a good Wi-Fi connection. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and you are connected to a network under Settings > Wi-Fi. Then, open up Safari and browse to a webpage, like http://www.apple.com, to verify that your Wi-Fi is working.
- Restart your iPad by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button on top, and sliding to power off when prompted. Then, hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo. Once it's restarted, have someone try to call you via FaceTime and see if you can answer it.
- Sign out of FaceTime, then back in. You can do this under Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID and choose Sign Out from the pop-up menu. Then, turn FaceTime off by clicking the toggle switch at the top of the page, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Note: If you're not signed in with your Apple ID, that's OK--just turn FaceTime off, then back on.
- Reset all settings on your iPad. This is done under Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. None of your content will be erased from the iPad when you do this, however your customizable settings (like your wallpaper, ringtones and alert sounds, Date & Time settings, etc) will be reverted to their factory defaults. In addition, saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and previously used APN or VPN settings, will be removed.
- If you're still having trouble answering FaceTime calls after going through the previous steps, you can back up your iPad, then restore it back to factory defaults, setting it up as a new device (without restoring your backup temporarily).
To back up your iPad using iTunes or iCloud, use the instructions in the following linked article.
