Q: how do I transfer photos from iPhoto to iCloud

I have a Mid 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2 and am trying to transfer my photos from iPhoto to iCloud so I don't lose them when I get my new Mac. I have tried highlighting them and moving them to a new photo stream but it has not been working. I don't want to have to buy an external hard drive. The man at the Apple store said to transfer them to iCloud.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Hiya creekercat,

There are many options to solve this problem. One would be to get a thumb drive or storage device of some sort that you already own to store them on. Even better, if you have Google Drive or Dropbox, upload them to there. I don't really recommend you putting your photos onto iCloud because it takes up a lot of storage. If you don't have any of the options above, you might as well wait until the new Mac comes and AirDrop them directly through Finder to your new Mac. It will be a lengthy process but hey, at least you don't lose your files.

    Good luck,

    Raymond

Don't do this. Don't use Dropbox or anything else. You will damage your Library or lose data if you export from the Library.

Get an external disk. Drag the Library to it. When you get the new machine drag the library from it to the Pictures folder on the new machine.

    Done.
