Q: Changing partitions . . .

My Mac is backed up to an external LaCie disk that has several partitions as shown. One is seldom used and has 17 GB of unused space that I want to add to the LaCie SuperDuper partition.

How do I move that space, that is bring together the two icons shown on the Desktop?

You cannot "merge" two partitions. So it would mean reformatting the disk and selecting a new partition scheme.

What you could do is to copy the files if they are in a file format that you can copy unlike those in TM volume. Then re-size the volume they came from down as far as you can go.

Thanks so much for that -- knowing what one CAN'T do is pretty important!

Here's what I'm planning to do, please tell me if it won't work:

    • Move all the contents of the partition "LaCie old G5" to my Mac (all old stuff that needn't be on the ext. HD anyway)

    • Resize the partition "LaCie SuperDuper" by adding the newly-free space to it. (Perhaps I can put back the "Untitled 17.2 GB" somehow  -- I'd intended to add that space -- but it doesn't really matter)

What I'd like to end up with are just two partitions -- or 3 with "Untitled" if necessary.

My object is to make things work until I can get a new, larger external HD or maybe a pair.

P.S.  Seems I need to change some info -- while I do still have an old G5, that's not the computer in use, an iMac Retina 4K.

    Sounds like a plan.
