Safari downloads button disappears?

If I download something using Safari, the downloads button appears on the Safari tool bar, but after a while it disappears again?

If I now have a URL of something I want to [copy] paste into the downloads list, I can't because the button has disappeared ?!?

If you clear the download list, the download button will disappear until another download is initiated.

By default, download items are cleared after a day.

Change preference setting to clear download list items manually.

Safari > Preferences > General > Remove download list items:

Click inside the box for options to choose.

That's not how Downloads work. You don't copy/paste something to it. Downloads just shows everything you've downloaded to your hard drive. If you want to save a list of things you want to download, open Stickies and create a new note.
