Q: Bluetooth Speaker -- No Sound

Problem:  No sound output to bluetooth speaker.

Computer:  mid-2012 MacBook Pro. El Capitan 10.11.5 installed two weeks ago.

Situation: Sony SRS-X3 speakers connect to Bluetooth fine, but sound goes to laptop speakers.  System profiler shows correct information:

Apple Bluetooth Software Version: 4.4.5f3 17904

  [normal stuff deleted]

Devices (Paired, Configured, etc.):

  SONY:SRS-X3:

  Minor Type: Loudspeaker

Services: Hands-Free unit, SPP Dev, Headset

  RSSI: -59

  Role: Master

  Connection Mode: Sniff Mode

  Interval: 506.25 ms

  eSCO Supported: Yes

  SSP Supported: Yes

The speakers have worked correctly between the El Capitan update two weeks ago and today.  I haven't made any system changes since then.

The Sound Preferences pane shows only internal speakers as an output option.  The computer is working properly in all other respects.

I have tried rebooting, resetting the NVRAM, plugging in headphones, and resetting Bluetooth via the debug menu.  It seems the problem's primary symptom is the absence of Bluetooth as an output option on the Sound Preferences pane, but I haven't been able to find any discussions about that.  (I'm assuming that Bluetooth speakers would show up as an option, although Sound Preference pane help doesn't mention it.)

Try resetting the SMC.....might help, cannot hurt.

    Barry:

Thank you very much for the suggestion.  I thought about it, but there were none of the symptoms that ordinarily call for an SMC reset.

About three hours later, without doing a thing (except leaving for a couple hours) everything was working perfectly, and the BT speaker was showing up in the Sound preference pane.
