Importing GMail Contacts to iCloud

I had a Samsung Android phone where all my phone contacts were added and backed up to my GMail account. On purchasing my new iPhone 6s Plus, all my phone contacts were automatically restored after adding my GMail account. I would like to move/import my GMail contacts to my iCloud account for better manageability and backup. Is there a way to do this?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.3.2

If you sign out of Gmail you should be offered the option of keeping your contacts, this should move them to an 'On my phone' account, if you then sign in to iCloud and enable contacts, you should get an option to merge.
