Q: Install Maveriks

Hello, I have this problem.

I have a MacBook Aluminum late 2011, Only have a Snow Leopard CD, during the life of my laptop I went to all the upgrades until reach El Capitan, that charshed the system completely.

My TimeMachine has only the Backups with El Capitan OSX, but is not working this version any longer, I have tried lots of times to reinstall, format the HDD, change the HDD for a new one and nothing, the last OS that worked well was Maveriks or Yosemite. But I can not find them any longer on the App Store .

Is there a way to upgrade to Yosemite? since El Capitan is not working?

Thanks I hope this question is clear enough.

Best

Gerardo

You cannot install an older OS version from the present released one unless you previously had upgraded to one.  In that case it will show up in your purchases in the App store.  It is always best to have a TM backup of a working system prior to any upgrade just in case you want to roll back.  Sounds like you have no Mavericks or Yosemite backup.

Here is Snow Leopard, in case you no longer have it in App Store. You can upgrade from there to Mavericks.

Generally speaking you should always upgrade to the latest possible system that you meet the specs for, as long as you have no “must have” apps that do not meet the specs. The idea that upgrades/updates cause problems is probably derived from discussions you see here. ASC is like an ER for folks for are having problems, mostly the sick ones come here. Not the hundreds of thousands who upgrade without difficulty, never visit here and go merrily on their way. Besides improved features, updates/upgrades bring important security fixes.

If you want to troubleshoot why your system is not running properly, please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

    First, back up your Mac.

Now, open the Mac App Store. While holding the option key, click on purchases. If Mavericks is in there somewhere, then you're in luck. Otherwise, you cannot legally downgrade, so don't bother reading the rest of this. But if Mavericks shows up, download it.This will take several hours. If it opens the Install OS X Mavericks app when the download is complete, quit it. Refer to Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support. You can ignore step one on the page as you have already done it. After the createinstallmedia command is finished, shut down your mac. Now start it up holding down the option key. A boot menu should appear. Select your flash drive installer you created, and let it boot. It may ask you to select your language. Now open Disk Utility and erase your internal hard drive, which will be called Macintosh HD unless you changed it's name. Quit Disk Utility and select Install OS X. Follow the onscreen instructions, choosing your Macintosh HD when it asks for a destination. Let it install. Now you'll need to setup up a user account and move your files back.

If you never installed OS X 10.9 Mavericks, then it is no longer available to you.

The next lowest OS X version still available as a paid download (using a special paid download code) is OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion.

    Found here.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

Make sure you perform a complete backup of all the data on your Mac, first.

Pleased be advised that while some updates are still being released for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Safari on OS X 10.8 has not had any recent security updates and is not really secure any longer AND both Mozilla Firefox and Google are dropping support for OS X 10.8-10.9.

Mozilla Firefox will be ending their full web browser upgrade support by this mid-August, but will still offer security updates only in the form of ESR security updates until early 2017.

So, you can stay with using Moziila Firefox or switch to currently still supported browsers like SeaMonkey or Waterfox web browsers

Google is ending security support for GMail on older, non-updated email clients (like Apple Mail), so you will, likely, need to use another supported mail client like the one found in SeaMonkey or Mozilla Thunderbird email client which Mozilla is still, currently, supporting.

    Good Luck.
