Q: Compressor 4 hang while encoding Blu-Ray

Hello!  I'm on MacOS 10.10.5 and use Compressor 4.2.2, on a maxed out iMac.  Compressor will output an encoded video file and an encoded audio file on the desktop.  It will then proceed to create the disc, which I want saved as a .img on the desktop.  I have done this in the past.  Now, the process will hang about 50% thru and sit there idle.  A process called Create Disc is on my Dock, but it's doing nothing.

I have read about this issue but since there is no solution, I decided to post about it anyway.  The trick about deleting the Compressor prefs has worked in the past, but no longer do.  I'm at lost at what can be becoming worst as time pass...

Anyone know if El Capitan would cure this issue?

This is a production machine and I'm hosed right now.  Apple not liking BD is not a reason to provide a software that should do it but do not in real life!

Thanks!

Encoding a 5 minutes file worked.  Another, 20 minutes file failed.

Here is a capture showing the stalled process.  You'll notice that both the processor and the disk activity is just about nothing!

All the processes having to do with Compressor are 32 bits!  How about updating those Apple?

AFAIK, they have kept Compressor at 32 bit to maximize compatibility with older codecs,

How much free space on your boot drive?

Hello!  At the present time I have 713 GB free out of 1 TB, fusion drive.  In the past weeks I was able to create my Blu-rays with a lot less room available.

When the audio and video files are done encoding, and the disc creation phase begins, I notice from Activity Monitor, that the system is reading a lot of data from the HD, up to the point the progress bar in Compressor is 50%, then it abruptly stops reading and just sit there indefinitely.

Also, each time I have to abort a stuck encode, and then quit Compressor, the "Create Disc" process stays active, and need to be Force Quit or it won't release and even prevent rebooting the computer.  I'm thinking this is the issue : Create Disc hangs, and Compressor is merely waiting for it to finish its tasks.  I'm gonna investigate this closer!

Is there still such a thing as a complete reformat and reinstall in the Mac world?  Last time I had to do so was over 15 years ago when we had installation DVDs with the computer!  I have a complete and up-to-date Time Machine backup and all my finished videos are stored on other drives.  I could afford to do it at this time.  When restoring from a Time machine backup, can we selectively chose what is restored and what is not?

This issue still isn't resolved.  I'm now actively researching other softwares do do my jobs.  Since I considere the product as defective, and can't find a way to contact Apple online about this, I'll be evaluating my options.  Thanks again Russ.

    Otherwise read this.

Rather than doing a clean install, I suggest creating a new user account. If your issue is caused by some conflict in your main user account, running Compressor from the new user could rule that conflict out – or not.

Hello.  I did try the creation process from another account.  You may have missed it from a previous message I posted.

As for the help page about DVD and FCP, well, I have been using iDVD since it was first available and still do, because it has great menus, great resizing quality (from HD to SD) and great mpeg encoding quality.  My issue really is only Blu-ray authoring which has worked fine up until 2 months ago.

This spring I have installed an utility app by Shure, which has nothing to do with my video production workflow, and drivers/control panel for a Black Magic Mini-Monitor converter box that I use in FCP-X.  I can't see how this could affect Compressor.

Actually, the real issue is a process called Create Disc, that is launched by Compressor to do the actual disc output, but hangs mid-process, with Compressor merely waiting after it.

I think I'm over with Compressor.  That bug, and the sad fact that I can't put multiples videos on the same disc with menu, will be the nail in the coffin!  I'm told that the Toast suite is quite good.  Will try.

Hello fellow Pro users!  I'm still troubleshooting this!

I decided to try encoding from the Share facility in FCPX, using the same setting I wanted to use in Compressor, and I was able to create several Blu-ray .img, including one of a 80 minutes long video.

Reimporting back already saved Master .mov files into FCPX is a drag but manageable.  I have several files to do as I kept larges HD masters since late 2013 but only got a Blu-ray burner recently.

It would seem to imply that the bug is really within Compressor, as the underlying software that is doing the heavy lifting is working correctly with FCPX.
