Q: Post not editable after to many changes?

First of all, I hope this is the right place to post feedback regarding the website we're all using right now ... if not, please pardon me, the whole new website design feels a bit ... confusing to me.

I just signed up for the Apple Support Communities and posted my first question. After posting and viewing my post, I spotted a few typos, so I clicked Edit to fix that. After saving I noticed the differences between your WhatYouSeeIsNiceButTotalyUnrelatedToWhatYouGet editor and decided to fix that, too. Took me a few rounds and then, suddenly I wasn't able to click Edit any more. My post still looks somewhat ... unbalanced.

I suppose, there is a feature in place, that disables editing after some time or number of previous edits?

It would really be nice, if you could:

  • update the editor's styles.
  • maybe display the number of remaining possible edits next to the Post or Edit button (if applicable).
  • maybe display a countdown banner with the remaining time a post can be edited on top of the page (if applicable).
  • disable or reset this feature until you have done the things above.

Thanx!

Trust me, Styles are irritating for the reader. Avoid them. Keep it simple. You can edit a post for up to 15 minutes after making it.

Trust me, inconsistent styles are far more irritating than no styles at all. But wisely chosen, styles help the author to convey a message more clearly.

Ah, many thanks for that information!

Your overuse of italics illustrate my point perfectly.

You call it italics, I call it a polite (and unobtrusive) form of emphasis.

You call it 'overuse', I call it 'more like talking to a person in real life'.

You think they are to be avoided, I am happy they are here and I think whoever configured that editor:

    they thought so, too.

    Let's agree to disagree.

Sure. But you're not letting the reader decide how to read the line but forcing your version on him or her. That's irritating.

That's the whole point of communication: to impress your version of whatever you're trying to say on the other person. Shifting emphasis can shift the meaning of a message. So, either I'd have to use a lot more words (but I'm a lazy person ) or I can use those nifty little buttons Apple has given me to get the job done.

Well, since these forums are mainly for technical issues, it is best to keep it simple and consistent; after all, you would want the reader to be able to quickly scan your post and get to the heart of the problem. Quite a few seasoned helpers here (including myself) do not read posts when they get too confusing (at least that is what I call an "over-styled" post with many different fonts and other embellishments). Technical issues are best explained in an easy to read font with some screenshots if necessary.

    Like I sayed:

    Let's agree to disagree.

... but especially if you are interested in the use (or unusefulness) of styling in technical information exchange, I'd recommend reading the W3C's notes on applying styles to semantic information.

... and btw.: this whole website doesn't feel that technical. Technical is what i saught, but it's all more like:

"I have a problem ..." — "no problem at all, just kill an alligator, dry it's skin, make some potion out of that and when the moon is full restart your mac" — "It worked!" ... "Oh, it didn't work ... 'xcept it worked for 23.5 hours ... but now I have a rash" — "Hm, then ... just blow into the ventilation slots" — "Thanks! I'll do that as soon as I'm out of the ER!" — "Hello, I have the same problem as the one above but mine is different ... I already tried to try the alligator thing but I live in Canada ... where do I get an alligator from?" — [...]

    But back to topic:

If this area indeed is the right place to post comments / requests / feedback regarding this website:

      • ... ??? Is this the right place?
      • It would be really helpful to have some 'hidden conversation' feature (just some checkbox 'Off toppic' on the Reply page, and in the thread some line of text stating 'Click here to toggle the display of some statements totally unrelated to the original topic'), allowing for off-toppic discussions in a thread without disturbing the overall readability (Don't wonder how I came to that idea! ).
      • Whenever I click on Reply, there is an alert stating "Auto-saved versions of this content were found:" and when I click onto Restore, I get my last post inserted. Except for when I just accidently closed the tab with my post, then there was no alert after clicking on Reply (should be the other way around?).

... just bind some auto-save functionality to window.onclose
