Photos and El Capitan10.11.5 Problems

I am running Photos on a Macbook Pro using system 10.11.5. Photos will no longer allow uploads to Mail or Facebook and a consequence of attempting to do so is a range of other features failing, such as quiting, are dimmed. I have run Photos Repair and Disc Repair but there is no improvement. Any ideas?

Hi..

A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help ...

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

  1. Start or restart your Mac.
  2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
  3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

Then try uploading photos (sharing) via Mail or Facebook.

What does "Will no longer allow" mean? Are the options missing in the menus? Are you getting error messages? If yes, what is the error message?

When did this problem start? What happened right before you first noticed this problem? Did you update or upgrade software, or run any new applications? Move the library? Import photos?

Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

Any ideas?

Try to narrow down the problem.

Then please report back with the tests.

Thank you Leonie.

You ask: What does “Will no longer allow” mean? It means that attempts to upload to Facebook or to Mail a photo yield no result. There is no Error Message.

Immediately after each attempt, almost all commands, including the Quit command under Photos are dimmed and any further attempt to upload or mail triggers a warning ping and nothing happens.

I think the problem may have started with an upload of photographs. I have now deleted all recently uploaded/imported photos since the problem began.

I am not using iCloud Library.

Problem occurs for all photos tested for Mail/upload and in a new Library created for testing and also in a new user account, s you advised.

Thank you for these tests. Problem remains, however.

That is looking like a system wide problem. I hope, our system expert Carolyn Samit is still looking into this discussion.

Have you checked your System Preferences > Accounts? Are your accounts still enabled?

Can you share photos to Facebook or Mail, if you open a photo in preview and use the Share button in the Preview toolbar? If even preview cannot share photos, I'd reinstall the system. Try to run the Como Updater: Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 Combo Update

where is your Photos Library stored? Is it on a supported drive? It should be stored in your Pictures folder or on a locally mounted drive, formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), not on a network volume or synced volume.

Thanks Leonie. I have worked through your suggestions and still the problem persists.

Specifically: Accounts are enabled; could not - and still cannot - share to Mail or Facebook from Photos; same problem in Preview. Library is stored in Pictures on locally mounted drive, formatted MacOS Extended.

I have run the combo updater, nothing seems to have changed from this. Can I download and reinstall the whole system?

Thanks!
