Internet weirdness after 10.11.5 upgrade

Hi

My 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) upgraded itself to 10.11.5. I'm now having problems with its internet connection. The clock thinks it's 2001 and doesn't respond to changing the time server or any other attempted adjustment. I ditched the World Clock preferences with no effect. Safari can't verify any certificates so every website visited has to be manually Okd. When I arrive at a website CSS doesn't always work so that sites display in blue Times Roman. When I tried to reinstall the OSX using Recovery it errored when trying to validate my machine with Apple.

The only common factor I can see here is the internet, but it's working just fine for all my other devices and the MBP seems to be fine with its connection.

Any ideas what to try next?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Thanks for all those suggestions. I changed both time and date settings and then restored the defaults; I reset the NVRAM and the SMC and it still thinks it's 2001. I've also noticed that it's not downloading pictures in Mail -- perhaps because of the certification thing?

I'm going to research how to get hold of an El Capitan disk image on one computer to transfer to the MBP and reinstall.

Happy to hear any more ideas you may have. I'm grateful for your help.

Solved the problem with help from Apple Support. The apparent internet problems were caused by the date and time setting which was earlier than the start date on the internet certificates of the various sites and services that weren't working.

The real problem was the automatic updating of the time that just wasn't working. I deselected that option, set the time manually to the correct time to the minute and switched the auto updating back on and all seems well. I have a residual suspicion because two different laptops with identical settings are showing different times by 30 seconds. I know the server's working because if I manually change the hour then switch it back to auto the hour is immediately corrected. I'd expect the time server to do the same with the seconds value, but perhaps it doesn't.

Thanks all for your help.
