how can i remove bit torrent alias file from library

I had utorrent installed on my mac accidently when at uni and have now removed it, I dragged app to bin, I'm now removing associated folders manually in the library. When I did a search library in my finder panel, it keeps popping up 3 of the following files com.bittorrent.sfl (which is a document file type) if I click on it and try to move to trash, trash option is not highlighted, if I double click the file I get the message: The alias “com.bittorrent.utorrent.sfl” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found. I choose the option delete alias which I am given but they are still showing up in library when I perform a search. Can anyone give me any advice how to remove them, please? Everything is functioning as normal but I might still have a bug.

Using el capitan on 10.11.1 MB

Thanks in advance.

One way to get rid of stubborn files like this would be to use the Terminal app (found in /Applications/Utilities.)

Type "rm " without quotes. Note the space after the two characters.

Drag the file icon onto the Terminal window The path to the file will be written to the Terminal.

Hit Return. The file should disappear. Note that it will not be in your Trash.

Best of luck.

Hi LB,

Thanks for your reply. I tried your suggestion but the files are not "draggable" in that they will not move. When I clicked info, I had the name of the file which I copied and pasted into the terminal with the rm space before but I got the same message as before when I already tried something similar which was

rm com.bittorrent.utorrent.sfl

rm: com.bittorrent.utorrent.sfl: No such file or directory

It's really annoying and it refuses to die a death, any other suggestions?

Regards

Thanks LB,

Unfortunately, I can't find the file. I can find these annoying files when I perform a search in the finder search box, but there is no file path for them, I have searched all my library files manually and can't find them anywhere.

Is there another way to find these files or

Will I have to do a system recovery ?

Any tips appreciated.

The deleted file itself is probably still running.

Restart the mac, then empty the trash bin, then delete the alias. either by moving it into the trash or with the terminal command.

But even when if it is difficult to delete the alias: it is harmless: an alias is not running, when the other torrent file are gone it will never be used.

Thanks Lexiepex,

I tried your suggestion, but as I can't find the filepath name or actually locate it manually in my library, its probably impossible to remove unless I clean up properly. I take your advice that as its an alias it does not really matter but, they are still annoying.as I just want all trace of it off my mac. I have filevault turned on, I will turn it off and try the process again using terminal.

One thing I did notice was there was another file I found I wanted to get rid of ,from an old app in my library preferences folder, the file path name was visible in the finder in library so, I located it and I deleted it, but after your suggested restart, Ive done a search again in the library search bar, and it has re-appeared.. Are these things hidden bugs in the apps or just erratic normal behaviour.

Appreciate your answer,

Thanks

Ley
