Q: MacBook Air won't power on.

Hi there,

I have a MacBook Air that is about 1.5 yrs old, with no problems until now.  It started with a random shut off at the log in screen.  When restarted, it powered on for a couple seconds then shut off.  It didn't say 'Shutting down' or anything like that, it just went blank.  It's been charging quite a while, and the charge indicator light is lit up on the plug that fits into the device (not on the device itself).  It won't respond at all to anything, no noises or anything at all happening.

I've tried they keystroke to reset the SMC.

Any other ideas?  It seems battery related from the way that it shut off randomly, then restarted just for a few seconds, but I don't know what else to try.  Obviously, on this model the battery isn't accessible.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you've done some good troubleshooting already. Is nothing else plugged in? Just the power cord? Have you recently altered anything by getting some new hardware or installing software?

Try holding the power button for ten seconds, then press it once more and see if the computer comes on.

At this point, if none of that helped, maybe take it to an Apple Store and see what they say.

I went through this article and tried everything but a different power source, because I only have one.

    Thanks for the replies.

Question: is it possible for the charging indicator LED to be lit up on the power supply plug, but still not be charging?

    Yes . It is possible.

Hold the option key down, and click the battery icon in the menu bar to check the condition of the battery.

Does it say Condition as "Normal"?

You can also check for other details this way.

Hold the option key down and click  in the menubar, and then choose "System Information".

Hardware > Power > Battery Information

    Best.
