Q: Overheating hot warm Iphone 6s

I have a Iphone 6s 64 GB brand new and did a backup on my old iPhone so it would backup only text messages, calls, and apps.

it's version 9.3.1

My iPhone gets pretty heated to to the extent that because a bit irritating. It usaually happens when I play small games such as Steppy Pants, shouldn't the A9 chip be good enough to be cool when playing regular games?

Could the heating have to do with a problem the backup even when it only we are talking 4 GB, or because could it be because of the CPU?

Playing graphic-intensive games will always cause the phone to get warmer than usual, check this article:
Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using the latest backup. Install the game and test the phone after that.
If the temperature is within normal limits, restore from the backup.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
