Q: Truly bizarre behaviour from 10.11.15

Hi all,

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2013 model that recently experienced its first major upgrade technical issue - basically it would freeze on start up, booting in safe mode resolved nothing and after a short period of taking an hour and a half to boot a clean install appeared to have solved the issues. The recent upgrade has made another shambles only with some truly strange happenings:

  1. Start up is slow - ridiculously slow (1.5hrs)
  2. When waking from sleep - nothing works. Shut down required.
  3. The login screen appears twice - my user account only on the screen. Password entered and hit enter. Screen Dims. Same screen appears. Password entered. Actually enter the account.
  4. As a safe guard, I have created a second administration account that has been set up and accessed as to ensure it is operational. This is never visible at the log in screen (and yet the guest account that has never been active is present sporadically by default on start up) This second administrator account is only accessible once logged into the original created account which continues to degrade.
  5. Any interruption or change in state of bluetooth or wireless requires restart to resolve or it will never reconnect. Wifi connectivity is dodgy but I know thats a thing and won't whinge about it here.
  6. Keychain is practically useless - its asks for passwords on behalf of individual apps for about 20 minutes at a time - I've restored it, deleted it, disabled it, running first aid is greyed out - for my sanity and a consistent network signal I have not disabled it but systematically starving it of the requested data. Its annoying to dismiss it constantly but its better that than having it gorged with precious system keys that allow it to juggernaught through my network services demanding that everything stop because it needs another password entry for an app to use.
  7. The mac refuses to ever start in safe mode. I can try until i am blue in the face and it won't ever do it. Normal mode even when it looks like it is shifting to safe mode. The one occasion where it looked like safe mode (written in red in the title bar) the label disappeared without restart.
  8. When i select shut down - the mac will shut down 1 in 4 times. The remainder of the time it sleeps (as after shutting down, there is no apple logo and loading bar - simply the login screen as if it were sleeping - even though restart or shut down have been selected)
  9. Very strange SCWTL-#.wvx files appear in my download files and the following messages in console kill everything to do with the network immediately:
    1. CONSOLE entry for this which is bizarre is from quicklooksatellite and is as follows:
    2. [22:51:50.787] <<< FFR_Common >>> FigFormatReaderCreateForStreamReturningMatchingContainerLabelType: *** Could not find format reader for URL "file:///Users/JD/Downloads/SCWTL-3.wvx" path "/Users/JD/Downloads/SCWTL-3.wvx" extension "wvx" FileType '' MIMETYPE "(null)" SuggFileName "(null)" SuggNameExtension "(null)"

This is some of the odd behaviour. I would be really grateful if any of these could be explained. Its very weird as I have not initiated any of these behaviours and I like to think that I am a cautious browser only looking at legit sites and never clicking on silly email links etc.

Thanks in advance

John

Make sure you have reliable backups and then:

Use Disk Utility to verify/repair your disk.

If it's possible to restart in 'Safe Mode' and the problem goes away run EtreCheck:

        http://www.etrecheck.com/

    and post the results here.

If you think this started happening because your upgrade went wrong then download and use the 'Combo Installer' for OS 10.11.5, e.g.:

        https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1876?locale=en_US

and if this doesn't fix it reinstall OS X:

If you can get to it, look in Security& Privacy system prefs, FileVault, and see if it is encrypting the drive.

By default, the option to enable FileVault is set for Notebooks during the Startup Assistant. For some, the process is very slow and causes similar behavior to yours.

I don't know what those files are, though.

Is it possible you have been hacked?  My mac pro laptop is mid-2009 and I have never seen anything like you have described.

If you have FileVault enabled, that would explain 3, 4, and 7.

You seem to have installed Clean My Mac.

In my opinion this was a bad decision; it is unnecessary and harmful to the correct operation of OS X and could well be at the bottom of your issues. There may be other causes but until you have removed Clean My Mac it is pointless to investigate further. See for example the discussion and advice here:

    Do I disable file vault?

And those files - I can't open them and don't really want to. Is it safe to delete them? Is there a way of knowing what they are or where they have come from?

Has it completed encrypting? The problems you see (short of not having the admin user enabled) are caused by it being in the middle of encrypting and hanging up.

If it has completed encrypting, you shouldn't see those problems.

Clean my mac is installed but is never used to clean anything and has no routine or scheduled operations.

It was installed to provide reference points for information on the mac (ie. Uninstall files that I manually delete when uninstalling an app that the apps uninstaller has left behind etc) - it has never been utilised in its capacity of maintenance or clean up.

I use MAC utilities exclusively for any verification, maintenance or clean up requirements.

It has been left logged in for 48 hours after the clean install to cover any large syncing requirements of the cloud data. As this is a clean install and no files were transferred until after this 48 hours had passed, one would assume even the most elaborate of encryption would have been completed. The new admin account is not the admin account that is problematic. It was created as these anomalies began to become prolific so I would have a back door to perform recovery tasks. It too has no files apart from the standard config of an admin user account

Yes, that is what should have happened, but that is not what I was asking. It seems neither of us understand what the other is saying. As such, nothing much will come of it.

Erring on the side of helpful - I currently receive no warnings or indications (that I am aware of) that the encryption, original or subsequent, is in a state of error or incompleteness.

I am assuming you would expect an system warning indicator like a notification to flash from time to time, an entry in console to highlight an incomplete file vault state or for a warning within file vault settings similar to iCloud sync status indicators. No such warnings are present.
