Q: Can't export pptx in Keynote 6.2.2 to Powerpoint 2008 for mac v 12.3.6.

When exporting from Keynote 6.2.2, both pptx and ppt are available, but only files exported using ppt are read by Powerpoint 2008 for mac( v 12.3.6.)  For  files exported as pptx, Powerpoint returns error message that they aren't readable. Only first slide shows.  While exporting, the blue progress line doesn't go beyond the middle of its track.

Trouble shooting done: All photos in presentation are jpegs, none are grouped. No special fonts or any animation. Cant export very small files to pptx. Export to pptx doesn't work on either IMac or Powerbook Pro. I also reinstalled Keynote and have restarted computer several times (once using Shift key for software repair).  What's perplexing is that I was able to save to pptx previously. It's almost as if my Powerpoint 2008 is seen as a 97-2003 version. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I tried to duplicate that (exporting a large set of slides from Keynote 6.2.2, first as PPTX and then opening that file with 2008 PowerPoint.

    I got the error message.

Then (exporting a large set of slides from Keynote 6.2.2, as PPT and opening that file with 2008 PowerPoint.   I got error message but a couple of removed gifs were placed in a folder. So I took the original Keynote, removed those two gifs and exported again as PPTX, same error when opening in 2008.

Finally, I created from scratch a new Keynote presentation, saved it again as PPTX and tried to open with2008 PowerPoint.  No go, either.

Then, saved that same new Keynote as PPT format and opened it with 2008 PowerPoint. That was fine.

So yep, I have the same experience as you.

This is correct operation by PowerPoint Mac 2008, the Pptx filetype is not compatible with 2008.

Therefor continue to export the PPt filetype for PowerPoint 2008 and export PPtx files for PowerPoint 2011 and newer.

Thanks for trying Sparkleberry.  What's interesting is that In May, 2015, I created a slideshow in Keynote and then saved it as a pptx and it worked.  So my guess is that it isn't the original software that's incompatible, but the interface with the operating system, or perhaps a upgrade in Keynote, so it no longer plays nicely with 2008 Powerpoint.  Truly appreciate you going through the steps.

Gary,  thank you for your advice and super fast reply.  Guess  Apple upgrades automatically but PP for Mac 2008 isn't keeping up. What's interesting is that this export worked in slideshow created and exported May, 2015. Guess it's time to rethink Office upgrade, even though Apple's products are super versatile and intuitive.  Again, so much appreciate your response.
