apple tv hdmi sound stopped working

4th Gen Apple tv tvOS 9.2.1 A1625 64GB - Panasonic TV TX-P42GT60B

Following upgrade to 9.2.1 no sound on playing through Panasonic tv via hdmi. No audible clicks when using remote. Sound does work ok when playing to another airplay device but will not work via hdmi to tv.

Tried the following without success

- reset of tv

- reset of Apple tv

- disconnecting hdmi cable and then re-connecting

- replacing hdmi cable with a different cable

- changing various audio settings on apple tv - like switching Surround Sound to Stereo, changing audio mode to 16 bit

Any suggestions on how to fix would be great. Thank you!

You should confirm that ATV Audio Output is set to "Apple TV".

Do you still get video from ATV on the TV? If so then your HDMI connection is fine, because the audio is mixed in with the video. So the problem is either an ATV setting or a TV setting.

Can you try another TV input?

You should check this https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200197 although it sounds like you've already tried most of the steps.

I figured out a work around. Your system may be different but I hope this helps.

My speakers are connected to my TV through HDMI cables and the setup is through my Marantz AV receiver. When I want to switch from my TV sound bar to my speakers I turn the power off for my sound bar and switch to HDMI, through the Marantz remote. What I did differently this time was to keep the sound bar powered on with the mute on. iTunes now channels my music through the speakers.
