how can I override the spinning wheel to save my current file before force quitting in Illustrator?

I opened a old file in Illustrator CS6 and got the spinning wheel. I don't want to force quite and lose my current illustrator file (no, I hand't saved in a while). Is there a way to circumvent to save my current file?

PowerMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

A good practice is too duplicate an important file before you begin working on it—so you can always fall back if necessary and Save as go

You can use terminal and the command line, copy & paste:

kill -SEGV PID#

substituting of course the process ID (PID) of your application

Also if you have Time MAchine turned on (which you should) you can use local snapshots in an effort to restore last autosave.
