You can't just make up a key, you need to purchase one from ms.

If it's an upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, you can enter the product key from the original OS. The digital entitlement will assign your Windows 10 license to the new install.

Your Mac does not officially support W10 as documented in Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support . You may still be able to upgrade to W10. Be aware that there are no certified drivers for Apple hardware on your specific model.

Its my first time installing the OS and i clicked on the 8.1 windows software. Are you also stating that my product key only is valid for the windows 10 software? Does that also mean that i will not be able to use windows 10 on my computer because my computer is not listed on the apple website for computers that can download windows 10?

What version of windows was the Key you bought for?

If you bought a Windows 10 Key, then that can only be used to install Windows 10.  You cannot install a Windows 8.1 OS with a Windows 10 Key.

However, you can use a valid Windows 8.1 Key to install Windows 10.

I would also suggest contacting Microsoft Support as this is an issue directly involving their product and their validation mechanisms.
