Does airdrop only work when devices are neaby?

Yes. I don't know the max range but it is an ad-hoc wifi connection so likely 30 feet max.

I have found Airdrop to be woefully inconsistent and intermittent . I do not know the resolve. Works great when it decides to recognize devices.
