Hiding/Restricting iTunes content w/ Family Sharing

I am the organizer of the Family Sharing plan. If you check the Restrictions Preferences in iTunes, it says that "Restrictions apply to playback, sharing & purchases", etc.

My question is, Why can I not restrict explicit content to children under 13, without also being restricted from viewing my content as well?

When I try to restrict the explicit content, I (being the organizer) won't be able to play, or purchase content marked as such. Why is this the case? Shouldn't the restriction only apply to the the Family member who is under a certain age? 'Hiding the content' results with the same problem. If hidden, purchases aren't visible to any device. But, I should be able to hide/restrict the content, only so the children can't have access to it. This is all very frustrating. 😠

Hi bmkruse,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities and for the detailed description of your issue. I understand that you're trying to restrict content for children under 13 through Family Sharing. I can certainly understand the importance of wanting to make sure they're only accessing content that you approve.

What you're experiencing is expected behavior, however iOS restrictions allows you to set restrictions on each child's device. This will allow you to limit what each person can have access to on their devices. You'll still be able to access all of your purchased content if you wish.

Family Sharing - Apple Support has great information on what you can do with Family Sharing. I've highlighted the particular section that applies to your situation.

Kids under 13 can have an account, too.

Now kids under 13 can have their own Apple IDs. As a parent or legal guardian, the family organizer can create an Apple ID for a child and add the child to the family group automatically. Ask to Buy is turned on by default, and the organizer can also limit the content kids have access to on their devices through Restrictions on an iOS device or parental controls in OS X and iTunes.
