Q: LaCie external hard drive

Just purchased a LaCie external hard drive (P'9233) from the Apple store.  Am running El Capitan.  Couldn't successfully install the external hard drive.  Keep getting error messages "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer".  My Mac mini does not recognize the external hard drive device.  Even the 'erase process' via disk utility failed.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

It's possible that the drive could be damaged, so as you have just purchased it, I suggest you to return it and get another one. If the same problem happens with another drive, it would be time to start thinking about an issue with your computer or with OS X.

What was the exact wording of the message when you tried to erase/format the drive?

What does Disk Utility say about the disk? Is it correctly identified with regards to capacity?

This message pops up in a window when attempting to erase/format the drive: Erasing "LaCie P9233 Media" and creating "Fran June 12 2016"/Erase process has failed. Press Done to continue.  Got the ext hard drive connected and the light on the ext hard drive is blinking.  Hope I didn't get a dud.  The disk is correctly identified as far as capacity in disk utility.  It reads: LaCie P9233 Media .. 4TB Uninitialized

When I selected 'Show Details' of the error message, this is what was also listed:

    Unmounting disk

Unable to write to the last block of the device.

    Operation failed ....
