Turn portrait video landscape?

I've got a video clip that is somehow in portrait even though it was filmed in landscape, all I need to do is rotate it to be the correct orientation and the video will be fine. There is a half an answer here but it is basically useless because if I do this then I have a correct video but with both sides chopped off and two black bars on the top and bottom and the overall project is still portrait...

How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Retina (4th Logic Board)

First, set your project to be the correct size.

It appears that you let your project's dimensions be determined by the first clip you dragged into it.

For the sake of argument, let us say your clip is 1080x1920 instead of 1920x1080, and you want to have it rotated and used in a 1920x1080 project.

1) Create your project. Explicitly set the dimensions of the project. Do not let it be set by the first clip.

2) Add your clip to the timeline. In the Inspector, change the rotation to 90º or -90º as appropriate.

3) In the Inspector, under Spatial Conform, set it to None.

WAs this shot on an iPhone? It's a problem in the camera rotation I happens I think if you change the orientation when you press record. I don't think it really can be fixed. You can use transform in the lower left of the viewer to adjust the size of the image and make it fit the screen. But if I think I understand the problem it's not properly fixable.
