Q: Two-step verification vs. two-factor authentication

I currently have two-step verification enabled on my devices (iMac OS X 10.11.5, iPhone 6s and iPad iOS 9.3.2), but I recently learned that two-factor authentication is available.

1. I don't see what the difference is; is two-factor better than two-step, and -- if so -- how?

2. Do I need to disable two-step before changing to two-factor, if I decide to change?

Thanks.
