Audio Line Out Missing from System Preferences

Mid 2009 - MacBook Pro

Two Audio Ports -- Audio (out)/Microphone (in)

OSX El Capitan v.10.11.5

Troubleshooting Thus Far:

(1) Warm Boot & Cold Boot

(2) Plugged multiple devices (speakers & headphones) into audio sound port

(3) Upgraded to El Capitan

(4) Ran Disk Utility Repair

(5) SMC Reset

(6) Spent a couple hours researching support community boards

(7) Contacted Apple Support via Chat help. Session was closed without ANY reply from tech! 😠

Next let's reset the NVRAM, this part of the memory stores certain settings that can impact volume and sound. Please follow the following steps:


  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
  3. Turn on your Mac.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
  5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
  6. Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.
